Authored By: The Circuit Trails | July 30, 2025

We’ve officially entered the height of summer. The days are long, the sun is shining and we’re all sweating! Not sure which trails have the most shade or can offer a waterfront breeze? We’ve got you covered! Add the trails below to your must-visit list this summer to stay cool #OnTheCircuit.
Perkiomen Trail
Spanning over 21 miles, the Perkiomen Trail, more affectionately known as the “Perky,” runs alongside shady, wooded areas, parks, town centers and of course, the Perkiomen Creek. The Creek offers all the classic waterfront trail opportunities including boating, kayaking and fishing. Don’t feel like treading water? The Perkiomen Trail is open to walkers, bikers, hikers and even horseback riders. The cherry on top–it even connects to the Schuylkill River Trail–another popular waterfront destination!
D&L and D&R Trails
At 165 miles, the Delaware and Lehigh Trail (D&L) is the longest publicly owned trail in Pennsylvania! The heart of the trail is the 63-mile towpath from Bristol to Easton that follows the flow of the Delaware River. Along this expansive trail you’re sure to be greeted by diverse wildlife, scenic landscapes and stunning riverside views.
For a New Jersey perspective of the Delaware, there are multiple points along the trail that connect the D&L to the Delaware & Raritan Canal State Park Trail (D&R). Historic bridges, picturesque scenes of the Delaware and the wildlife of central New Jersey await you on the 77-mile D&R.

Rancocas Creek Greenway Trail
Merging urban environments with charming greenspaces, the Rancocas Creek Greenway Trail is a favorite destination for a creekside stroll. This multi-use trail follows the Rancocas Creek, with connections to the scenic Amico Island Park at one end and the sprawling Pennington Park on the other, which is sure to keep you cool while you enjoy some beautiful views.

Pennypack Trail
Spanning across both Philadelphia and Montgomery counties, the 16.8mile Pennypack Trail is one of the longest creekside trails in the Greater Philadelphia region. The highlight of this trail is the 9.81 mile section that follows Pennypack Creek through Pennypack Park. There, you can stay cool under the sprawling canopy of trees or beside the winding creek that runs throughout the park. While you’re walking the trail, be sure to check out Pennypack on the Delaware, the park where Pennypack Creek meets the Delaware River!

And it’s important to always remember essential summer safety on the trails:
- Bring a water bottle. Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate! Replenish the fluids you’re losing through sweat and strenuous physical activity.
- Be sun savvy. Wear sunscreen and pack a hat for your trail adventures.
- Dress for the occasion. Choose lightweight, and light color, sports-specific fabrics. Dark clothing will also absorb more heat!
- Know your limits. If the heat becomes too much, take frequent breaks (especially in shaded parts of the trail)
