Back-to-School: Trail Etiquette 101

It’s time to trade beach bags for backpacks, because school is back in session.

That’s right! Students around the world, and right here in Greater Philadelphia are headed back to the classroom to continue learning, but before they can advance they’ll need to review what they learned last year. We were thinking that it’s time for us to do the same!

Even if you are no longer a student, we can all use a refresh on the trail basics. That’s why we’ve enrolled you in Trail Etiquette 101 – the Circuit Trail user’s crash course guide to staying safe #onthecircuit! So pay attention and take good notes because you never know when there may be a pop quiz on the trails. Let’s get started!

Lesson 1: Be aware of your surroundings.

Life is full of distractions, but it’s up to you to be observant. Bumping loud music directly in your ears may make it a bit difficult to hear any commotion around you, especially from bikers who may not realize that you’re listening to your favorite tunes while you exercise. Be mindful of yourself and others by staying alert – you’ll stay safe and help others do the same. (As for headphones, one in/one out is the safe bet!)

Lesson 2: Look before you pass.

The rules of the trails and the rules of the road are very similar. If you are going to pass someone, look behind you and ahead of you to see if anyone is also trying to pass at a higher speed. If you are not passing (or if you just seem to be moving slightly slower than others) stay to the far right for your safety!

Lesson 3: Be courteous.

Sharing is caring! If you are with a large group, be aware of how much trail space you are using. Don’t hog the whole trail, make sure there is enough room for others to pass. If you stop along the trail, move to the side so you are not blocking the path.

Lesson 4: Mind your pets.

We know our four-legged friends love the trails as much as we do. Pet owners, try to keep your pets close to your side when you see a large amount of people on the trail. With so many wonderful things for your furry friends to sniff, it’s easy for them to accidentally get in others’ ways without realizing it!

BONUS LESSON: Enjoy your trip!

Make the most out of your time #onthecircuit. Consider riding with friends, attending an event or explore new areas. Whatever you do, make sure you have fun! The Circuit is meant to be free, safe and fun. Now that you have completed your Trail Etiquette course, we’re counting on you to help us keep it that way!

Be sure to share your notes with your friends and family to help keep them safe #onthecircuit. If you’re looking to earn a little extra credit, consider enrolling in our other course – Bike Safety 101. This additional reading is sure to put you at the top of the class!
