My Circuit Trails: Lloyd’s Experience

Lloyd Johnson has been cycling since he was a kid, but in his adult years, he hasn’t been able to make as much time for riding as he would like. Over the summer, he decided to make a change.

Lloyd discovered the Cramer Hill Waterfront Park Trail, a segment of the larger Delaware River Heritage Trail in Camden, New Jersey, and has made a habit of riding the trail #OnTheCircuit regularly.

“I started riding, and I really felt better, physically I felt better,” said Lloyd. “It makes me feel one with nature.”

Cramer Hill Waterfront Park is a relatively recent addition to the Circuit Trails network, but one that was highly anticipated by the community. The park opened in November 2021 along a section of the Delaware River waterfront that was once the site of an 86-acre landfill. Over the years, the prime-time real estate was sealed off, cleaned and remediated for community projects like the neighboring Salvation Army Kroc Center and 62-acre Cramer Hill Waterfront Park.

In addition to sweeping panoramic views of the Delaware River, Petty’s Island, the Benjamin Franklin Bridge and Philadelphia from atop the park’s summit vista, park-goers can enjoy the trail and the park’s other paths, an amphitheater, fishing plaza, kayak launch, picnic area, playground, sensory garden and shoreline observation areas.

Lloyd enjoys the park’s access to paved and smaller dirt trails, offering a challenge for his rides.

“There’s a lot of elevation change here (in the park). My favorite thing to do is come down the hills…turn off the paved path and jump onto the dirt trail. It’s just a little bit of off-road mixed in with my regular paved riding, and that’s fun,” said Lloyd.

Lloyd relishes in the time he spends out on the trail, reconnecting with nature. Something that has become more difficult with his busy schedule.

“Sometimes we get caught up in our office lives, and we sit in our office all day long. We drive our cars to work, we drive our cars to the store, and we don’t really get out in nature. That feeling of being one with nature will bring inner peace to you. It may not solve any of your problems, but at least let you face them with a smile.”
